8.3.2. Instructions on operation of tires


At installation of the tire with the directed road drawing (such tires can be recognized by an arrow on a tire sidewall) it is necessary to provide the necessary direction of rotation of the tire surely. Thanks to it the optimum behavior of the tire concerning hydroplaning, couplings with the road, noisiness and transfer of traction effort will be provided.

Durability of tires

Service life of tires depends generally on the following factors:

  – air pressure in tires;
  – sizes of nominal pressure of air in summer tires are specified on a sticker on inside of a cover of the hatch of a fuel-filling mouth;
  – maintenance of the recommended air pressure in tires at the movement at high speeds is especially important. Therefore it is necessary to check air pressure in tires at least, once a month and before each distant trip;
  – at the same time it is worth to remember to measure pressure of air and in a spare wheel;
  – on an emergency spare wheel of the reduced sizes the nominal pressure of air is specified on a tire sidewall;
  – in a full-size spare wheel it is always necessary to support nominal pressure for a case of full load of the car;
  – air pressure in tires should be checked always at cold tires. At the elevated pressure of air in heated tires it is not necessary to let out the air from the tire. At considerable change of loading it is necessary to change respectively air pressure in tires;
  – on cars with full-size caps of wheels, instead of dustproof caps there are extenders for ventilation improvement. During the checking and adjustment of pressure of air in tires there is no need to unscrew these extenders;
  – too low or too high pressure of air in tires reduces service life of tires and worsens road performance of the car.


At the long movement with a high speed in tires with excessively low pressure a lot of work of side deformation of tires is made very much owing to what tires strongly heat up. It can lead to a separation of elements of racetracks of the tire and even to a gap it.

Too low pressure of air in tires leads to the increased fuel consumption. Because of it there is excessive load of the environment.

Style of driving

Overcoming abrupt turns at high speeds, rapid dispersals and sharp braking – all this increases wear of tires.

Balancing of wheels

Wheels of the new car are balanced. In use the car under the influence of various reasons balancing of wheels can be broken that can be noticed on deviations in normal work of steering.

The imbalance of wheels leads to the increased wear of details of steering of tires and suspension brackets of the car therefore at emergence of an imbalance it is necessary to carry out balancing of wheels anew. Vibration of a steering wheel from an imbalance of wheels is shown in the certain range of speeds and vanishes at decrease or increase in speed. Besides, balancing of wheels is necessary after installation of the new tire and after each repair of the tire.

Wrong angles of installation of wheels

The wrong angles of installation of wheels cause not only the increased wear of tires, especially unilateral wear, but also promote decrease in traffic safety.

Indicators of wear of tires

Arrangement of markers on a tire sidewall (for example, the letters "TWI" or the pictogram in the form of a triangle)


In flutes of the drawing of a protector of tires there are "indicators of wear of tires" the 1,6 mm high tires located at right angle to the direction of progress. These indicators in quantity from six to eight (depending on firm of the manufacturer) are placed through equal distances on a tire circle. Markers on a tire sidewall (for example the letters "TWI" or the pictogram in the form of a triangle) show location of indicators of wear of tires.


Intensive wear of tires is promoted by a sports manner of driving, intensive accelerations and sharp braking.

Tires can operate ся before achievement of depth of a profile of 1.6 mm, that is flutes of a profile have to have depth on all surface of the tire not less than 1.6 mm. However for safety it is recommended to make change of tires with a depth of profile of 2 mm.

Sheena M+S on snow have sufficient coupling with the road with a depth of profile not less than 4 mm.

It is necessary to survey the tire on existence of cuts and to establish their depth. If cuts reach a cord, the steel cord will korrodirovat from the getting moisture.

Tires have to be replaced the latest when their protectors are worn-out up to indexes of wear.

Worn-out tires do not provide, especially at the movement with a high speed on the wet road, necessary coupling with a paving. Besides, at worn-out tires there comes the hydroplaning much quicker (loss of coupling with a wet paving.
