2.7.3. Check of a compression in engine cylinders

GENERAL INFORMATION

Use of a tester of measurement of pressure of compression for check of a compression in cylinders of the diesel engine


Check of a condition of the engine can be made by measurement of pressure of compression in engine cylinders. If to make this check regularly, then it is possible to learn the beginning of wear of the engine in advance, without waiting for the moment when wear of the engine is shown in low overall performance of the engine.

Warm up the engine up to the working temperature. At the same time the accumulator has to be completely charged.

Unscrew all spark plugs.

Engines 1,6-I

Disconnect the electric socket from the ignition coil.

Five-cylinder engines

Remove the air branch pipe located between the air filter and a zabornik of air for what weaken collars and disconnect the electric socket from the air consumption measuring instrument. Remove an air branch pipe together with the valve of ventilation of a case of the engine.

To five - and six-cylinder engines

Disconnect the electric socket from the control unit of ignition. The control unit of ignition is in электричес which chains between the control unit and the coil of ignition.

Six-cylinder engines

Disconnect all electric sockets from fuel nozzles or take the safety lock No. 28 established in a power-supply circuit of the fuel pump.

Include neutral transfer and tighten the emergency brake.

In an opening of a candle of the first cylinder establish компрессометр or a compression pressure tester.

The assistant has to press an accelerator pedal against the stop and turn the engine a starter. After a provorachivaniye of a bent shaft by one or two turns pressure of compression has to increase to a maximum, and then be stabilized. Make record of the maximum received result.

Similarly check a compression in other cylinders.

Compression pressure in all cylinders of petrol engines should not differ more, than on 3,0 bars, and on the diesel engine – 5,0 bars. Pay attention that the size of compression has to increase quickly on the serviceable engine. The low pressure of compression on the first turn of a bent shaft accompanied with gradual increase in pressure on the subsequent turns of a bent shaft indicates wear of piston rings.

The low size of pressure on the first turn of a bent shaft which slightly increases further indicates a thinness of a prileganiye of valves, the punched laying of a head of the block of cylinders or existence of a crack in a head of the block of cylinders. Wear of the ends of cores of valves can lead to the low pressure of compression also.

If pressure in one cylinder lowered, then carry out the following tests. Fill in through a candle opening in the cylinder of a little engine oil and check compression pressure.

If filling oil in the cylinder increases compression pressure, it specifies that the cylinder or piston rings is worn-out.

Low pressure in two next cylinders indicates a laying burn-out between cylinders.

If pressure in one cylinder is 20% less, than in the others, and the engine idles unstably, it indicates a worn-out cam of the camshaft.

If pressure of compression is too high, it indicates that the combustion chamber is covered with a thick layer of a deposit.

After this check screw in spark plugs.

Connect the electric socket to the control unit of the ignition coil. On the six-cylinder engine connect sockets to fuel nozzles or establish a safety lock in a chain of the fuel pump.

Five-cylinder engines

Establish into place an air branch pipe and fix it by collars. Connect the electric socket to the air stream measuring instrument.


Prevention

After a detachment of electric sockets of system of ignition and injection of fuel in the electronic control control unit the engine the message on malfunction registers. It is recommended at the first opportunity to erase information on malfunction which is written down in memory in a specialized workshop Volkswagen.


Diesel engine

Disconnect the electric socket from the engine stop valve.

Disconnect the electric socket from a flowmeter on the fuel pump.

Unscrew all glow plugs.

Instead of candles of an incandescence screw in a tester of measurement of pressure of compression with a flexible transitional hose, see rice. Use of a tester of measurement of pressure of compression for check of a compression in cylinders of the diesel engine.

Turn a bent shaft of the engine a starter until stabiliz pressure fixed by the measuring device rutsya. Make record of the received result.

Similarly check a compression in other cylinders.

Screw in glow plugs, having tightened their moment 15 Nanometers and connect the tire of giving of tension to candles.

Connect all earlier removed electric sockets.
