2.2. General information

GENERAL INFORMATION

On the PASSAT cars are established four - five - and six-cylinder engines. On chetyrekhtsilidrovy engines cylinders are located in one plane, and on six-cylinder engines cylinders are located in two planes, at an angle 90 ° to each other (6V). Cooling of engines is made by cooling liquid. Engines settle down in a motor compartment along a car axis.

The block of cylinders is manufactured of gray cast iron in which material непосредствен but engine cylinders are manufactured. The head of the block of cylinders is made of light alloy and bolts fastens to the block of cylinders. In a head of the block of cylinders steel guides and saddles of valves are pressed. To the lower part of the block of cylinders of the engine the oil pallet in which the oil necessary for lubricant and cooling of the engine flows down fastens.

In petrol engines the scheme of a cross stream at which fuel-air mix comes to engine cylinders on the one hand of the engine is used, and exhaust gases are removed on the other side of the engine. At such design of the engine filling of cylinders fuel cart with stuffy mix and removal of products of combustion considerably improves. On diesel engines for economy of the place inlet and final collectors are located on the one hand heads of the block of cylinders.

Petrol engine 1,6-I and diesel engine 1,9-I

The camshaft is installed in a head of the block of cylinders and is put in action by a gear belt from a pulley of a bent shaft. The control of the inlet and final valves installed vertically is made by camshaft cams through hydraulic pushers. For supply of fuel in cylinders of the diesel engine the fuel pump of high pressure fixed on the block of cylinders and put in action by a gear belt is used.

About five valves – 3 inlet and 2 final are installed in this engine on each cylinder. The drive of valves is carried out by two camshafts. One camshaft operates inlet valves, and other camshaft – final. The drive of the camshaft operating final valves is carried out by a gear belt from a pulley of a bent shaft.

The drive of the camshaft operating inlet valves is carried out by a chain from the camshaft operating final valves. Increase in number of valves at the cylinder considerably improves filling of the cylinder with fuel-air mix and removal of products of combustion.

Engine 2,3-I (VR5)

In the VR5 engine five cylinders are located in two planes at an angle 15 ° in one block of cylinders. Two camshafts installed in a head of the block of cylinders are put in action by a chain. About one inlet and final valve is installed in each cylinder.

Engine 2,8-I (6V)

On each cylinder about three inlet and two final valves are installed. On each section of the block of the cylinder the separate head of the block of cylinders with two camshafts is established. One distribute a telny shaft another operates inlet valves, and final. The drive of the camshafts operating final valves is carried out by one gear belt. The drive of the camshafts operating inlet valves is carried out from the camshafts operating final valves.

All engines

Adjustment of valvate gaps is made automatically with use of hydraulic pushers and manual adjustment is not required.

For supply of oil to the rubbing surfaces of the engine the oil pump which in four - and five-cylinder engines is located in the oil pallet is used and its drive is carried out by an intermediate shaft. On six-cylinder engines the oil pump is located in a forward cover of a bent shaft and its drive is carried out directly from a bent shaft. Under pressure oil moves to channels to bearings of cranked and distributive shaft.

The water pump on four - and five-cylinder engines fastens sideways the block of cylinders of the engine. The drive of the water pump is made by a maple or poliklinovy auxiliary belt which also puts in action the generator, the pump of the amplifier of steering and the compressor of the conditioner. On the six-cylinder engine the water pump is located in a forward part of the engine and is put in action by a gear belt. Keep in mind that cooling systems of the engine it has to be filled all the year round with mix of antifreeze and water with the low content of lime.

Preparation and ignition in cylinders of the engine of fuel-air mix is carried out by an engine control system which does not demand adjustments. The corner of an advancing of ignition and turns of idling are regulated by a control system of the engine. In the course of carrying out maintenance it is necessary to make replacement of spark plugs and the filtering element of the air filter.


Prevention

The fan of a radiator can turn on after switching off of the engine and ignition therefore at work on the hot engine be careful. In order that the fan of a radiator did not turn on, disconnect the electric socket from the radiator fan engine.
